Historic, Valuable Civil War Flags, Artifacts in Auction, Dec. 1 & 2

Four rare, valuable flags from Tennessee regiments under the historical elements that are offered in one of the largest public auctions ever conducted of significant Civil War artifacts. The auction could also mean that a famous Virginia General’s personal battle flag may soon be the first time someone outside of Virginia.

Ownership

The auction of flags, swords, uniforms, documents and more than 500 other major 1860s civil war in terms of Tennessee at Nashville fair grounds will be conducted and online by Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas, Texas (www.HA.com) 1. and 2 December 2006.

“Nearly 3,000 battles and skirmishes were fought on Tennessee soil during the war between the States, and many of the men who fought were Tennessee Volunteers who have their own home made flag sewn,” says Tom Slater, director of Heritage Americana .

Colorful, battle-worn flags of the 3rd, 4th, 18th and 31 Tennessee divisions are included in the auction and pre-sale estimates of Tennessee flags from $ 75,000 to $ 140,000 more than any.

The flag of prominent Confederate cavalry officer, Major-General JEB Stuart is flown, also presented in the auction.

Stuart’s personal “Southern Cross” battle flag, hand-sewn for him by his wife, Flora, is now privately by an anonymous collector Virginia, which has sent him one of the auction. The flag was displayed for several years at the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond.

“Stuart’s cavalry was is from his family for three generations owned and is one of the most historically important Civil War battle flags ever offered at public auction. The presale estimate of $ 400,000 or more, and it could bring $ 1 million,” said Slater.

General Stuart’s gold spurs are available in the auction, and are at $ 100,000 or more appreciated.

“There is never an auction of Civil War terms in this size with so many personal items, find the origin of the original owner is known,” said Civil War antiques expert Gary Hendershott of Little Rock, Arkansas, a consultant to Heritage Auction Galleries.

“The personal flag of such a prominent Confederate general has never been offered at public auction to date. Many of the items in the auction were considered and studied by museum historians and researchers, including curators at West Point.”
